Australian CBer’s – CHECK THIS OUT:- KOGAN UNLIMITED PH/TXT & 6GB BROADBAND for $29!!
[2014 DEC UPDATE – This service was unexpectedly dissolved when Kogans 3G supplier went into receivership and ruined this fantastic 3G system from Kogan – From here I went to Aldi but that was unsatisfactory with less so I went to Vodafone 3G]
I am testing my new KOGAN SIM out as I write this waiting for it to be activated after receiving it today.
Was a bit disappointed it took a few days longer to get than they advertise, but I guess it IS Xmas!
My plan is to set it up in my Telstra Ultimate Modem on the roof with the KOGAN APN programed into it and see if it will hook up to the Telstra 850Mhz Broadband Network.
I have a few modems from Telstra and will test it in all of them as well as my HTC DT2 old Phone which seems to be working so far while waiting with Telstra logo and KOGAN in CELL ID# bar. I also have full signal strength which I do not get on my usual THREE SIM.
As my QTH is on the Bellarine Peninsula I am hoping it all works into the local Telstra Tower I have line of sight to.
I dont think it will run the high speeds shown below on SPEEDTEST.NET that I was able to get on my $69 -6GB a month business plan, but I will be happy to get a decent 300/400 ping onto the TRIBES2 USA Servers with it.

MY GREAT ISP – WHAT A WASTE of MONEY!
Guy’s I have just had a fantastic Telstra experience that obviously is not the norm from what I read on here -[Whirlpool.net Forums]. (BTW I DONT work for Telstra! 😉
I have Telstra Wireless 3G Broadband 6GB Mth with a Telstra Turbo 7 Gateway or Netcomm 3G10WVT modem router. Unsurprisingly from info on here re that modem, the speed has been crap for a fair while and I have extreme difficulty connecting to a USA game server from my home in Geelong region which has mainly prompted me to do something about it.
Some of my speedtest.net results before I contacted Telstra about this problem are below:
9/20/2012 4:41 AM GMT 101.169.127.237 0.99 Mb/s 0.41 Mb/s 111 ms Adelaide ~ 650 mi Image
9/20/2012 4:17 AM GMT 101.168.127.241 0.43 Mb/s 0.28 Mb/s 118 ms Melbourne ~ 850 mi Image
9/20/2012 4:13 AM GMT 101.168.127.241 2.59 Mb/s 0.35 Mb/s 120 ms Brisbane < 50 mi Image
9/18/2012 7:38 AM GMT 101.173.127.232 1.36 Mb/s 0.87 Mb/s 67 ms Adelaide ~ 650 mi
Then I decided to put the Modem outside on the flat iron roof in a plastic weatherproof enclosure with a cat5 and power wire up to it so the twin 3G antennas could see the Telstra tower only a half kilometer away in full view.
9/24/2012 4:52 AM GMT 101.169.42.168 5.10 Mb/s 1.01 Mb/s 114 ms Melbourne ~ 1000 mi Image
9/24/2012 4:49 AM GMT 101.169.42.168 4.85 Mb/s 1.08 Mb/s 128 ms Adelaide ~ 650 mi Image
9/21/2012 3:44 AM GMT 101.172.213.70 2.92 Mb/s 1.23 Mb/s 77 ms Adelaide ~ 650 mi
Obviously better but the tower is only 500 meters away!!
So I contacted a Telstra Employee through a Friend on a personal basis who arranged another telstra person who rang me and arranged a more up to date modem for me, FREE OF CHARGE – the Ultimate Gateway Netcomm 3G42WT that has provision for two external antennas but none included unfortunately.
I mounted the new 3G42WT on the roof in place of the 3G10WVT and immediately got vastly better speeds.
9/28/2012 7:36 AM GMT 101.173.85.84 9.32 Mb/s 0.60 Mb/s 57 ms Adelaide ~ 650 mi Image
9/27/2012 10:16 AM GMT 101.168.85.62 9.63 Mb/s 1.06 Mb/s 75 ms Brisbane < 50 mi Image
9/27/2012 9:38 AM GMT 101.168.85.62 7.49 Mb/s 0.28 Mb/s 87 ms Brisbane < 50 mi Image
9/27/2012 9:36 AM GMT 101.168.85.62 6.35 Mb/s 0.49 Mb/s 119 ms Melbourne ~ 850 mi Image
9/27/2012 7:30 AM GMT 101.168.85.62 3.11 Mb/s 0.65 Mb/s 87 ms Melbourne ~ 850 mi Image
I then got a phone call from another Telstra Tech in Perth! that confirmed that the radiation pattern from the cell tower was pointing away from me and I am on the fringes. This has explained why I dont get maximum speeds and I am going to add two high gain antennas soon to see if I can do better.
I have played around with Cablenut Adjuster and TCPOptimiser and gotten better download speeds but uploads are not as good which is not good for gaming.
Latest speeds are below
10/5/2012 12:07 PM GMT 101.172.255.245 10.99 Mb/s 0.81 Mb/s 68 ms Adelaide ~ 650 mi Image
10/5/2012 5:08 AM GMT 101.172.85.70 10.69 Mb/s 0.41 Mb/s 56 ms Adelaide ~ 650 mi Image
10/4/2012 9:46 AM GMT 101.173.85.85 8.13 Mb/s 1.30 Mb/s 59 ms Adelaide ~ 650 mi Image
10/4/2012 2:10 AM GMT 101.173.85.75 12.53 Mb/s 1.80 Mb/s 41 ms Adelaide ~ 650 mi
I dont know why Speedtest.net always says I am in the middle of Australia and wants to connect to Adelaide?
BUT the SECRET IS to try to find someone who personally knows a Telstra employee as they seem to have an internal policy of trying to help Telstra clients as much as possible.
This probably does not apply to Telstra phone shop employees who are a different breed!! Hope this helps somebody…..
It sure has helped me to get this….
